Violent events caused by businesses and the state; hidden violence against women, children and the elderly; the way in which poverty hurts injures, hurts and kills; the impact of environmental pollution – all of these rarely attract the same level of political and public concern as ‘conventional’ crime.
In September 2008 a national photography competition will be launched by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King’s College London as part of our ‘What is crime?’ project. The competition will invite images which confront and challenge the different contexts in which the powerful inflict violence and harm upon the powerless and challenge popular ideas about what crime is, who commits it and who gets harmed....more

The Malafi Photo Initiative is a small grassroots project working with 14 orphaned children in rural Sichuan Province. The project aims to provide some basic financial assistance for the children for a three-year period, and to enrich the participating children with a fun, creative experience. The project supplied cameras to 14 children who then collectively chose and worked to the visual theme My Village Life. Basic photography workshops provided children with the skills and inspiration to document their own lives through their own eyes. The workshops also acted as a platform for self expression and communication. Exhibition and print sales in Shanghai will be used to raise funds and a local exhibit in Liangshan is planned to display the work and inspire local community awareness and understanding.
Established in 2007, exclusively dedicated to non-Western photography, Photoquai is a biennial event held in Paris in odd years. The second edition incorporates the fundamental mission of Photoquai: to develop relationships with artists whose work is unprecedented in Europe, and to encourage cross-eyed lookings on the world.
The second edition will be held from September 22nd to November 22nd 2009 on the banks of the river Seine along the musée du quai Branly and into a large number of renowned Parisian institutions, partners of the event. The 2009 edition will particularly care to ensure continuity between outdoor exhibitions and exhibitions inside partner institutions. As the organizer of the event, the musée du quai Branly will programm indoor exhibitions, and dedicate a part of its garden to photography.
Caroline Edge recently travelled to Novosibirsk Siberia to photograph the Solar eclipse and attend the opening of her exhibition at the No Soap gallery. She gave a talk on photography and spiritual experience through a translator and was interviewed for the local newspaper, and for national radio (Radio Mayak). More information on blog and website.
Photo MA graduates Ade and Zoe are back in India promoting the film Death of a Postcard they made as part of their final work on the course. Sales of a DVD and cinema screenings are growing.
Interview with Mr Parr, who looking at his recent work seems to be doing his best work since the 80s at the mo and doing interesting things in magazines. Call it a brief respite from Multimedia... :) A lot of it is fairly obvious (like shooting your own ideas then pitching them, being proactive etc) but I like his idea of dressing documentary up as entertainment to widen it's readership. Love him or hate him he remains one of the most successful documentary photographers of all time. ..more

Laura’s work is a personal account of her experiences with internet dating. After answering personal ads in Beijing men’s lonely heart sites, she recorded her preparation, journeys and meetings, which are exhibited along with extracts from her shooting diary. Laura started the project to research the effects of China’s imbalance in the ratio of men to women, which is causing many men to use the internet to broaden their search to find their perfect match.
Through her portrait series of professional Mongolian women, Grace seeks to challenge the perception of Mongolia as an under-developed country dominated by a rural nomadic population. Over half of the 2.9 million inhabitants now live in an urban environment, mostly in the capital Ulanbaataar. Statistics from a UN report last year show that out of 115 Countries surveyed, Mongolia came top for women’s participation in the professional and technical workforce. This project shows a variety of roles that women play in Mongolian society by photographing them in their working environment. ...more
Staff and students from the photo MA are working on a unique insight into life in China during the Olympic Games for the newspaper USA Today. Every day during the Olympics, USA Today will stream a short video on its website from three teams travelling throughout China. The project is the idea and work of current student Tom Dooley.
After the videos have been screened on the USA Today website they are then posted to the project site. Each team will also contribute to a project blog and image gallery as they travel. A Chinese version is also being broadcast on the Chinese version of the Financial Times ...more
